Today we are looking at luxury watch manufacturer Jaeger Le Coultre. The story began in 1833 when Antoine LeCoultre founded his workshop in Le Sentier, from which he manufactured watch gearing with his brother Ulysse. Specialising in metallurgy and gear-mechanisms Antoione created the Millionometer in 1844 which was the first instrument capable of measuring components to one millionth of a metre. 3 years later in 1847 LeCoultre created a revolutionary 'push-piece mechanism' for rewinding and setting the time on watches, a process which had previously relied on keys to perform this task.

Following on from his father's work Elie LeCoultre recognised the need to control all aspects of the manufacturing and assembly so he expanded his workshop into a watchmaking factory (a 'manufacture'). The next 30 years saw LeCoultre's Manufacture create in excess of 350 different calibers and establish itself as a brand associated with quality and luxury.

In 1903 Edmond Jaeger challenged Jacques-David LeCoultre (Antione's grandson) to produce ultra thin calibers of his own design. Following this challenge a friendship was formed between the two men which would eventually result in the creation of the brand Jaeger Le Coultre.

At Second Time Round we have a wide range of luxury watches from all the prestigious brands, including Jaeger-LeCoultre. Currently we have the Jaeger Le Coultre Grande Sport watch available with the following features:

* Stainless steel polished case and winding crown
* Rotatable protective centre
* Highly polished dial surround
* White dial
* Sapphire crystal glass
* Stainless steel bracelet
* Quality Swiss automatic movement
* World famous Second Time Round one year guarantee

For full details, to check available stock of this item or to place your order please click on the picture.

Breitling Watch

As long-standing, experienced and successful watch sellers in the heart of London we are experts in all brands and our knowledge of watches stems from our passion for them. We specialise in finding and selling luxury brands and rare timepieces. One of those brands we have not touched upon within this blog section is the Breitling watch.

Having been aware that a Breitling watch is considered to be a high-end item you probably won't be surprised to learn that it is a Swiss brand, or that it has its roots in the aviation world. Nowadays it retains many aviation-related functions, however they are more status symbols than anything used in a practical sense.

A typical Breitling watch has a large face to allow for the extra elements and dials to be displayed and to provide good visibility for the wearer. One interesting aspect of many watches in the Breitling range is that they feature a wholly mechanical automatic winding mechanism.

We have a rolling stock of watches in all brands but usually have a few items we normally carry. To have a look at the Breitling watches we usually have available click on the watch catalogue button on the menu to the left. Don't hesitate to contact us with any queries or if there is a particular model you would like us to find for you. Synonymous with this country's most famous secret agent, James Bond, Omega is one of the most prestigious and well known brands in the watch world despite it's humble beginnings. The story begins in Switzerland during 1848 and a young man called Louis Brandt. Taking parts from local craftsmen Brandt put together key wound pocket watches and sold them throughout Italy, Switzerland and England.

Louis died in 1879 after which his two sons took over the business, immediately deciding to take control of production in house after problems with the previous assembly workshop. Shortly afterwards they moved the Omega watches business into a Biel factory, before moving again in 1882 to a larger factory in Gurzelen; which remains the headquarters for omega watches to this day.

In 1903 the Brandt brothers died, by which time their business was one of Switzerland's largest watch companies. The eldest of four people who inherited this growing empire, Paul-Emile Brandt, is credited with being the creator and builder of Omega watches as we know them today. His efforts throughout the First World War and the years following to unite Omega and Tissot were successful before also merging the two brands within the SSIH group. This group continued to absorb other organisations and give birth to others eventually growing to contain fifty plus companies. Although the 1970s saw the SSIH group as Switzerland's largest watch producer financial complications would plague the group by the turn of the decade and various business transactions and overhauls took place until 1985 when stability was finally reinstated. In 1998 the company was re-branded the Swatch Group and Omega watches continue to be sought after throughout the world.

Omega watches introduced the world to co-axial escapement in 1999 after it's invention by George Daniels, an English watchmaker. This design ensures reduced friction with the movement and thereby increases the length of time necessary in between each service and ultimately the lifespan of the watch itself.

As I mentioned before Omega watches have also been the watch of choice for James Bond since 1995. In particular Pierce Brosnan's Bond wore the Omega Seamaster from the Goldeneye film of that year. The most recent incarnation of Bond, played by Daniel Craig, also wears the Seamaster in Casino Royale. One final piece of interesting trivia regarding Omega watches is that it is the first brand of watch to land on the moon! Although his original model is now lost Buzz Aldrin wore the Omega Seamaster on his lunar landing mission.

There have been several limited edition Omega watches released, often with tie-ins to the Bond franchise or the moon landing, and as such these pieces are difficult to get your hands on. If you should require one of these or any other model of Omega watch then please don't hesitate to contact us with your requests. We have a watch finding service and our 25 years of experience gives us the contacts to ensure a thorough and competent search for your watch choice.

Omega Watch UK

As specialists in second hand watches Second Time Round stock the most prestigious watch brands and only the best examples of each model. We are often quoted as being the 'largest British dealer in second hand Rolex's' but don't let that fool you into believing we only stock Rolex. We have a continuously updated range which includes Omega watches, Cartier watches, TAG heuer and IWC. Are we the biggest dealer in Omega watches in the UK? Well we don't have an Evening Standard quote to back that claim up, but we certainly have a fantastic number of quality timepieces in this exciting and luxurious brand.

For a full list of the Omega watches currently available, with delivery anywhere in the UK, click on the picture of the Omega watch above.

Of course throughout the UK Omega watches are synonymous with secret agent, James Bond. Indeed global affection for the British superspy makes Omega watches, in particular The Seamaster, an extremely popular choice among men of all ages. There have been several models released in conjunction with the latest Bond film release and because of the limited nature of such things they can often be difficult to get your hands on these days. However should you require it, or any other Omega watch sourcing out, we operate a watch finding service which allows you to specify exactly which timepiece you are searching for, allowing us to put out the feelers, using our 35 years of experience and contacts within the industry to come up with the goods.

Cartier Santos Watches

Cartier Santos watches have enjoyed a reputation as globally renowned time pieces since 1904 when Louis Cartier first designed them for his friend, and aviator, Alberto Santos-Dumont. Prior to the creation of the Santos pocket watches were the mainstay for the majority of the population. Indeed Cartier Santos watches are often credited with being the first wrist watch specially designed for men.

Although it was first produced as a commissioned piece in 1904 Cartier Santos watches didn't go on sale to the general public until 1911.

At Second Time Round we have several great examples of Cartier Santos watches. The acronym by which the brand is now known is derived from a simple, yet elegant and powerful name: the International Watch Company. As with several other brands the IWC watch started out life in Switzerland. However it was an American watchmaker, Florentine Ariosto Jones, who actually founded the company during the year of 1868. Using experience he'd gained whilst working as the director of America's leading watchmakers, E. Howard and Co., it was Jones' vision to create a company that combined the quality Swiss craftmanship with the more contemporary engineering techniques and technology coming out of America at the time.

The IWC watch began life in the Swiss town of Schaffhausen, in a factory rented by Jones in 1869. Five years later and production was at such a level that Jones commissioned local architect, G. Meyer, to design and build a factory specifically for the IWC to further expand their business. By 1875 the new factory was complete and housed 196 workers, each one putting together the IWC watch.

If you are looking for an IWC watch Second Time Round can source it out for you. We are always updating our stock lists with new and used prestige watches. There are a couple of IWC watches which we normally carry, which you can view details of by clicking the link. We also provide an online stock checker, a currency converter and a watch finding service if the particular model you want is not listed.

Rolex Yachtmaster

Second Time Round has enjoyed unrivalled and continued success as "The Largest British Dealer in Second Hand Rolex's". Originally established in 1985 this family-run company offer a comprehensive and professional service and have a continually rotating stock of rare and highly desirable prestige watches. Of course the biggest watch brand synonymous with such qualities is Rolex and Second Time Round stock arguably the most complete range of secondhand Rolex watches. One popular watch in the Rolex catalogue is the Yachtmaster.

The Rolex Yachtmaster is primarily a sports watch which was first brought to market in 1992. Consisting of 18KT yellow gold the initial model was the 11628. Two years later a ladies version of the yachtmaster (69628) and a mid-size mans model (68628) were introduced. This was actually the first time Rolex had issued a professional watch in a smaller size.

During 1996 the Rolex Yachtmaster was released in a two-tone finish for both the ladies and the mans mid-size models. The two-tone finish comprised of stainless steel and the original 18KT yellow gold. The following year Rolex introduced the yachtmaster in a stainless steel and platinum finish; one they call Rolesium.

Second Time Round can source out secondhand Rolex Yachtmaster watches or help reinvigorate your timepiece by refinishing it.

Rolex Submariner

I have previously written about the Omega Seamaster, taking a look at its tie in as the watch of choice for James Bond. Of course this is only a relatively recent association; the Bond purists will probably dismiss any claims to suggest that Omega *is* the superspy's watch. That's because in the books Fleming himself described a Rolex Submariner strapped to Bond's wrist. In addition to this Sean Connery's depiction of the agent featured the Submariner, as did George Lazenby's and the first couple of Roger Moore films too.

It was only the Pierce Brosnan films from 1994 where the association switched from the Rolex Submariner to the Omega Seamaster. And there it has remained. Of course the move is entirely financially motivated. Something (dull) to do with advertising rights (Omega agreeing to "jointly promote their association with the films' producers", Wikipedia).

Nevertheless the Rolex Submariner remains an extremely popular watch, not only because of its association with James Bond, but also because it it's another classic in the Rolex range which is built upon the same values of quality and reliability.

Aston Martin Watch

Gadgets are usually associated with all things masculine, although some people might suggest they appeal to the boy rather than the man in us! Of course it's not only the male of the species who is intrigued by flashing lights, captivated by spinning cogs, and drawn to pressing buttons, but I think we can assume that the item at the heart of this article, the Aston Martin watch, is primarily aimed at men.

Vicarious living is what marketeers attempt to inspire; they paint a picture with us as the protagonist, a hero regaled in armour and accompanied by all the accessories necessary to help us defeat the evil which lurks around every corner. We see our film, TV and music stars clad in items which define their status as a star, and then these items are dangled in front of us like carrots on a stick. We are flattered to believe that if we were to arm ourselves in the same clothes, the same gadgets, then we will instantly transform from dead-eyed suburbanites into white hot greased fires of pure heroism! Well, maybe we aren't all so gullible as to truly believe that, but nonetheless there is a certain amount of bragging rights to be gained from owning something like an Aston Martin watch. After all it costs somewhere in the region of £20000, plus if you buy along with the car (and why wouldn't you!?) this watch has features built-in which both lock and unlock the car and even start the engine! Short of voice activated shields what more could you want from a watch?

The Aston Martin watch itself is produced by Jaeger LeCoultre and is limited edition. So you might need to take advantage of our watching finding service if you want to get your hands on one these chronographs. And you might have to wait a while too. Unless of course any real Superspys are out there wearing these watches; the dangers they're exposed to could mean you end up with one sooner than you expected!

Diamond Bezel

Etymology states that the word "bezel" is probably derived from the 17th Century dialectal French word "biseau". Today we use this word to describe a method by which gemstones can be affixed to jewellery, such as watches. This process is often referred to as bezel setting. In it's most simple terms a diamond bezel is one where a piece of metal is created to be the same dimensions as the stone which is to be affixed and then soldered to the jewellery. The diamond can then be sat in its bezel whereupon the edges are curled over and pressed down to secure the gem in place.

A diamond bezel setting is often used in the production of jewellery because of its protective qualities; accidental damage caused by friction or knocks is reduced because of the way the bezel sits around the stone. This protects the jewel and the surface against which it may have been knocked.

Of course in respect to watches the bezel refers to the ring which surrounds the watch face. Many people decide to replace their old bezel either because general wear and tear has taken its toll on the finish of the original one, or sometimes because they fancy a change of face. It is possible, for example, to purchase a diamond bezel for the model, where the original was perhaps a more simple gold, silver or platinum finish with no gemstones.

Looks aren't everything, but they play a big part in why people choose a brand such as Rolex, Omega or Cartier, so having the ability to reinvigorate an old diamond bezel with a new one is useful to some owners.

Rolex Daytona - A Rare Breed

As a secondhand Rolex dealer, one of the watches we get asked about a lot is the Daytona. I suppose a large part of this comes from the fact it is a rare model. A self-winding chronometer wristwatch with chronograph born in 1961, the Daytona came in three different models; the Cosmograph, the Cosmograph Daytona and the Oyster Cosmograph Daytona and was in production until 1988. After this the winding mechanism was taken from Zenith's El Primero and renamed to be Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph. Nowadays, and since the year 2000, Rolex began manufacturing their own movements called the 4130. It is the probably due to the change in movements which make the original Rolex Daytona such a rare, and therefore, popular watches. I read an article recently where a person actually searched for 2 years before finally being given their "dream" Daytona for Christmas. I guess it gives an idea of what to expect if you decide to you want to own one of these yourself!

Used Rolex: Buying Or Selling

As a used Rolex dealer we also buy timepieces, so if you are looking to sell an unwanted item why not get in touch with us for a fair offer. Alternatively please check out our Online Store www.secondtimeround.biz.

Rolex UK was originally the brainchild of Hans Wilsdorf, and he was the person who found 'Montres Rolex UK'. This gentleman was born in 1881 in Kulmbach, Franconia. Unfortunately his mum and dad passed away not long after his birth and was put into a school for boarders by his uncle. With a keen interest in foreign countries, he landed himself an apprenticeship in an exporting firm. He moved in 1900 to the city of 'La Chaux De Fonds', for a wage of 80 Francs per annum he discovered his life course, wristwatches. His employer exported watches although very few were actually made by the company itself. With his sights set on greater things, Wilsdorf proceeded to obtain one pocket watch from each of the top three Swiss watchmakers and applied for official certificates from the Neuenburg observatory.

In April 1985, more than 4.1 million movements had been awarded the official 'Chronometer' title, though Rolex UK watches only make up about one percent of the total Swiss watch production. As I write this, Rolex UK are undoubtedly coming up with new ideas and initiatives ready to unleash them upon us in the 21st century. If only Hans Wilsdorf had still been alive to see how his empire had grown from one of humble beginnings to one of the most well known brands that has so far and will no doubt continue to stand the test of time.

Rolex UK were now employing over 1100 staff in both their Geneva and Biel offices and were spread amongst five buildings in Geneva alone. 1954 saw the introduction of the first ladies 'Oyster Perpetual' whilst two years later in 1956, the gents 'Day-Date' model was born, this allowed the wearer to view both the day and date whilst still enjoying every other promise Rolex had given. The 'Day-Date' is now available in 26 languages worldwide.

Cartier Tank Francaise

One of the popular brands on sale through Second Time Round is the Cartier Tank Francaise. First introduced during World War One and named after the machines of war which had impressed watch creator Louis Cartier, the Tank takes on the tough, rugged properties of these grumbling, shell-firing monsters. Since it's inception the Cartier Tank Francaise has become a classic, noted for it's beauty as well as it's hardy exterior.

Whilst reading around for reviews on the watch I read a couple of customer reviews (yes I should have known better) from a shopping web site. The first person seemed to have issue with the inaccurate use of Roman numerals on the face of the Cartier Tank; commenting on the fact that the number four was represented by four single lines, and not the "IV" she felt it should be. This reviewer also felt it was wrong for Cartier to print the bottom half numerals upside down. However most other customers commenting on this review rather shot it down in flames. A separate review of the Cartier Tank praised it's beauty and style, proclaiming it to be the "perfect gift"; given in this instance to his wife in celebration of her degree graduation.

As one of the most recognised brands in the world people have come to expect quality from the Cartier Tank Francaise watch and taking rather fussy and largely irrelevant arguments out of the equation, so long as you have done your research choosing this watch will make you a proud owner. Second Time Round not only have regular stock of Cartier watches, but as second hand retailers they are also able to seek out a particular model via a watch finding service. It is worth checking the web site often to see the rolling stock as it comes in. If you have any questions at all about any of the watches you've seen on this site, whether they be Cartier Tank Francaise or otherwise, then please don't hesitate to call.

Cartier Santos Watches

Below are details of the Cartier Santos, we currently have five different styles of Santos available in the Cartier selection, but this is always expanding. Having purchased a special watch for that special someone (perhaps YOU are the special one!) you are sure to want to keep your new timepiece in tip top condition. We have briefly taken a look at our watch restoration service, but today the focus is on watch polishing.

A little internet search revealed something quite interesting about the potential problems you could run into when it comes to cleaning your prized watch. When I performed my search for "watch polishing", I found a seemingly endless number of web sites offering me cloths, buffs and waxes which guarantee my Rolex or Omega piece would be sparkling to the point of blinding. Impressive claims and I am sure that many of these products do exactly as they report too. Indeed it is not my intention to cast a shadow of doubt across the creams and sprays I encountered. No ... BUT there is an important point to be made, something which is worth factoring in to the watch polishing equation: the human factor.

It is an unfortunate fact that the human race has yet to achieve perfection. The Utopia we strive for is constantly beyond our reach. Fallibility goes hand in hand with human endeavour. Give a person a host of materials and tools, and you can guarantee a host of finished pieces made from trial and error, with an emphasis on the latter. I recently read an article explaining how to polish the centre section of a Rolex two-tone bracelet. The author explained how careful precision could be used to fashion a watch polishing cloth around the tip of a cotton bud, then making sure you don't touch the "brushed" section adjacent to the polished one, use brush strokes, not so hard, not too soft, not circular, not cross hatched and in line with the grain of the metal. Immediately I was aware of how many times the word "careful" was thrown about with ironic disregard. It is my guess that a novice attempting to perform these actions might inadvertently cause more damage than polishing.

In conclusion I would recommend asking the professionals to complete any watch polishing you need doing. That's not to say that the discerning reader isn't able to perform basic cleaning tasks; but let us put into context the fact you have probably paid a substantial amount of money to have a watch you are proud of, why not treat it with the respect it deserves to ensure you can be proud of it for years to come?

Omega Seamaster

Omega Seamaster Professional is the signature model watch for Omega, a company who chose their name to symbolise ambitions of being the last word in watch production. Having earned many awards throughout a 150 year history, been chosen as the official brand of the Olympic Games, and selected by NASA as a reliable time keeper, the Omega Seamaster has now been worn by beloved British Spy James Bond for more than a decade. With all the hype for the latest Bond film, Quantam of Solace, surely around the corner this article is going to look at the different watches showcased by Bond throughout the 21 previous movies:

Dr No - Rolex Submariner, with no special gadgets or specialist fittings
From Russia With Love - Garotte watch. There doesn't appear to be a particular brand for this piece with the in-built strangulation device. Of course in this movie it wasn't actually Bond, but the villainous assasin, Red Grant, who actually wore this watch.
Goldfinger - A Rolex submariner is worn by Bond, whilst Honor Blackman's Pussy Galore wears a Rolex GMT during her flight sequences.
Thunderball - Beyond the Submariner, the Breitling "Top Time" Diver is also shown in this film, complete with Geiger Counter.
You Only Live Twice - No watch can be seen in this film, so 5 films in and we still have no Omega Seamaster.
On Her Majesty's Secret Service - George Lazenby's one and only appearance as the spy, and he carried on where Connery left off, by wearing the Rolex Submariner.
Diamonds Are Forver - No Omega Seamaster here ... in fact no watch at all.
Live And Let Die - A vastly updated Rolex Submariner appeared in Roger Moore's first installment; one that included magnetic abilities (capable of bullet deflection), and a spinning mechanism which allowed James to cut through rope restraints.
The Man With The Golden Gun - Bond sticks with his Rolex watch, as did evil marksman Scaramanga, although his was the Cellini King Midas model.
The Spy Who Loved Me - Time for a change? Well Roger Moore wasn't going anywhere for a while, but his trusty Rolex was ditched in favour of a Seiko Quartz model capable of printing out ticker tape messages from HQ. Before the advent of mobile phones and text messaging this must have been pretty useful tool in a spy's arsenal. Still no sight of the Omega Seamaster however.
Moonraker - Seiko LCD Digital was Bond's choice for this overly silly movie. A real shame, actually because the original Fleming book is one of the best books; needless to say it bears no relation to the film's plot.
For Your Eyes Only - A radio receiver was added to Bond's Seiko, allowing 2-way conversations to be carried out, whilst also incorporating a digital display for textual messages.
Octopussy - For Moore's penultimate film the Seiko Sports was his watch of choice, which was not only a digital LCD but also contained a TV screen for watching moving images transmitted via radio. Bond was also able to use his Seiko G757-5020 as an audio spy device in conjunction with a specially developed fountain pen.
A View To A Kill - Despite the exciting Eiffel Tower base jump this was a rather flaccid entry in the series, and was the last of Roger Moore's appearances as the superspy. His watch was a Seiko, but after the previous film's impressive watch gadgetry, this model was as unremarkable as the film.
The Living Daylights - Timothy Dalton marked his arrival as Bond by wearing ... an "unknown" watch. Oh well, I'm sure we'll hear from the Omega Seamaster soon.
Licence To Kill - Dalton was back, and so was a familiar sight to Bond fans across the globe. Yes, the old faithful Rolex Submariner was back on his wrist for what was to be Tim's last outing in his brief dalliance as Bond.
Goldeneye - Some have argued that Pierce Brosnan is as close to Ian Fleming's image of Bond as there's been. Which is encouraging for those at Omega, as this would mark the first film where he wore the Seamaster Professional. In-built were a laser cutter and a remote mine detonator. Interestingly both of these features were included in the Nintendo 64 game adaptation of the film.
Tomorrow Never Dies - Is it just me, or is this film on far too much considering it's a rather mediocre entry? Nevertheless Bond stuck by his Seamaster for this outing, which retained it's detonation abilities.
The World Is Not Enough - Omega Seamaster Professional complete with grappling hook.
Die Another Day - Woeful after the first half hour, this film was to be Brosnan's last as Bond, however it wasn't to be the last for the Omega Seamaster Professional.
Casino Royale - Daniel Craig's unfair reception as Bond was soon forgotten once the critics actually based their opinions on the film and not their preconceived (and incorrect) ideas. Craig continued to wear the Brosnan favoured Seamaster, and it looks as though Omega is here to stay as Bond's timepiece for the foreseeable future.

Second Hand Rolex

There are many popular and prestigious watches in this huge global market, but one stands out alone in terms of prominence of name, workmanship and popularity. That name is "Rolex" and is synonymous with everything associated with style and success. With arguably the most complete range of watches on the market there is undoubtedly something there for everyone. Be it for the discerning classicist to the city high flyer there is a compelling argument to choose one of these fine thoroughbreds.

The only problem with the huge popularity of Rolex is that it leads to large waiting lists for new editions and models. Therefore many people look to buy second hand Rolex watches, and there is now a whole other market which caters for this need.

The current trend for younger men is leading towards the perpetually popular but ever long wait for Rolex Sport Models. With waiting lists in some places now up to five years for a Daytona, 2 years for a Sea Dweller, 18 Months for a Submariner/Explorer and 12 months for a GMT, for many people buying second hand Rolex is the only option to acquire this much needed, high profile accessory to complement any wardrobe.

As far as popularity for second hand Rolex watches goes the Day Date, Rolex's flagship model, is still on top of the same pinnacle it has been on for over the last thirty years and remains an important example of refinement and class. A step down from the Day Date and you have the Bi Metal Datejust which has been a corner stone in Rolex's foundations for many years and is available in an assortment of dial colours.

Second hand Rolex watches are available for women too. By and large the Datejust is our most popular request. Unlike its male counterpart, the "Lady Datejust" has sold equally in its three major connotations (stainless steel, bi-metal and 18ct gold). A good selling point with the Datejust for both men and women is there is a wide range of coloured and assorted dials to choose from. Let us not forget the "Ladies Sports" though. The petite Lady Yachtmaster has been available in 18ct gold for some time now, but with recent editions to this range in the form of steel and gold and steel and rolesium models this is an exciting time for anyone looking to buy one of these watches.

Please feel free to browse through the main pages of our web site to view more of our second hand Rolex watches.

Patek Philippe Watches

If you were to ask a person on the street to name a famous brand of watch I am fairly certain the large majority of people would quote "Rolex" first. But those people who know a little more about watches might be more inclined to name Patek Philippe. As one of the most prestigious and expensive brands of wrist watch on the market it is regarded by many enthusiasts and collectors to be the best of the best.

Patek Philippe was formed after two men, Antoni Patek and Adrien Philippe, joined forces to merge their two businesses in 1851. Patek, a Polish immigrant living in Geneva, started out making pocket watches with a native friend in 1839 before parting company and joining with French watchmaker Philippe, who had already invented the keyless winding mechanism by that point.

Since they made their first wrist watch in 1868 Patek Philippe have been pioneers in many new horological technologies such as the split seconds hand, a minute repeater, and the perpetual calendar. In particular there was one pocket watch into which they squeezed twenty-four different functions. It was a custom design for Henry Graves Junior, commissioned as part of a friendly game of oneupmanship between Graves and a rival James Ward Packard. In 1927 Packard bought a watch which was at the time the most complicated ever built. 6 years later Graves had the "Supercomplication" designed and built by Patek Philippe to outdo his rival. This model was the only one built so when it went to auction in 1999 it was no surprise to many that it sold for more than eleven million dollars.

Patel Philippe watches have been enjoyed by elite members of society such as Queen Victoria herself, other monarchs, popes and political leaders. They are seen as highly desirable and have been presented as gifts to reward acts of bravery or loyalty. Having said that, Patek Philippe are a brand of exclusivity and this is emphasised when considering that in the entire 150 year history there have only been 600,000 watches produced, which is less than the number produced by Rolex in one year!

If you are looking for a Patek Philippe watch you can use the watching finding service on our main site.

Watch Refurbishment

Owning a watch as prestigious as Rolex, Cartier or Omega means you will have taken time and pride in making your choice. The quality of your luxury watch is something you would have held as important during your search. Buying vintage watches is not something done on a whim. As a result taking care of your timepiece is sure to be high on your priority list. However living life to the full is not about wrapping ourselves in a bubble so it is inevitable that a watch will pick up little scratches and marks from time to time. Fortunately it is possible for a watch refurbishment service to be performed in order to restore your watch to it's former glories.

The watch refurbishment which Second Time Round offer costs just over £40 and can be performed on both the bracelet and the head of the watch. In general the bracelet is the section which takes most of the wear and tear damage; often picking up scratches and losing the lustre and shine it previously had. It is possible to remove all abrasions and scratches from the bracelet whilst also removing the dirt and grease from in between the links and polishing the metal back to it's former shine.

When it comes to the head of the watch Second Time Round recommend that a watch refurbishment should not include the removal of scratches from the back of the watch. Especially when there are serial numbers or other authentication markings already present on this surface. The backplate is subject to being worn down through wear anyway, so to further exacerbate this effect would be foolish and could have implications on the watch valuation.

For more information about the watch refurbishment service and some useful advice in regards to looking after your watch to lengthen the time in between servicing please don't hesitate to visit our refurbishment page.

Cartier Watches

Having looked at Rolex watches for the last three articles I thought it was time to freshen things up a bit and take look at Cartier watches for this latest installment. Although Cartier watches were turned into a globally famous brand by three members of the Cartier family, it was actually their grandfather Louis Cartier who first invented this now classic watch.

The origin of Cartier watches has surprisingly similar roots as Rolex watches, both being based in aviation. As a aviation pioneer Alberto Santos-Dumont commented to his friend, Louis Cartier, that pocket watches weren't suited to use during flights and concurrently asked him if he could design something more fitting. Although the first wrist watch was invented in 1868 it was Cartier's wrist watch, originally designed for Santos, which was largely responsible for helping to make the wrist watch more popular than the pocket watch (which had previously been the most popular form of timepiece). In fact the Santos Cartier watch is credited as being the first wristwatch designed for men. The "Santos" went on sale to the public in 1911, although the original was created seven years earlier.

Continuing the story on we learn that Louis' son, Alfred Cartier and his three grandsons were responsible for the expansion of Cartier watches from a popular item to a globally famous brand. Alfred himself was a jeweller as well as a watchmaker and, with help from his sons, opened two new shops; one in London and one in New York. A further seven shops were set up around the world by the time the Second World War occurred. With the War finished Pierre Cartier became head of the business and president of Cartier International, which itself grew to become a multinational organisation.

Cartier has remained so special because they have always made wristwatches in a variety of shapes, round, square, tortue, tonneau, rectangular, and oval, rather than limiting themselves to one or two shapes. Their designs have always managed to be classic and modern at the same time. A Cartier watch can always be relied upon to make a fashion statement. Their emphasis an quality and design was a heritage from their beginnings as a jewellers. Their jewellery for women has always been among the most beautiful in the world, and remains a collectors pleasure. Cartier have consistently used the best quality for their watch cases, dials and movements, and this has reaped rich rewards as their customers return time after time to acquire more of the unique Cartier Magic.

Please don't hesitate to contact us if you need to us to find you particular Cartier watches. If it ticks you're being tricked, if it sweeps then no need to weep. Alright so I made the rhyme up and I don't imagine I'll be picking up any literary awards this year (or ever for that matter), but still, it explains the common thinking on the subject. In truth there are several indicators that will expose Rolex watches as being a fake.

The aforementioned second-hand "sweeping or ticking" is not without it's merits and is grounded in some truth as many of the cheaper counterfeits contain a crystal quartz mechanism which produces a start/stop tick per second. In contrast Rolex watches have a second hand with a much more fluid motion, although it is not entirely "tickless", rather it consists of eight movements per second. To the naked eye this will seem as one smooth motion, but is in actual fact not perfectly smooth.

Other Rolex watch fakes have been presented with transparent casing on the back, something very rarely produced by Rolex themselves. Another aspect to look out for is whether there is an engraving of a logo on the back of the watch. Rolex have never engraved their name or logo on the case back, with one exception being the Sea-Dweller.

In order to try and reduce the instance of counterfeit Rolex watches being mistakenly purchased Rolex have recently been releasing watches with holographic stickers on the back. Depicted in the hologram image are the Rolex crown logo above the reference number of the piece in question. In general a fake Rolex watch with a hologram will be given away by the fact that the hologram itself is a solid green colour, or it will even be non-holographic and simply contain the word "Rolex" over and over again. Even more recently a full circle has been reached and Rolex themselves have stopped releasing new watches with holograms on the back in order to make the counterfeits out of date.

Finally genuine Rolex watches have a date magnification bubble which will fit the date perfectly, whereas fakes will not be able replicate this effect accurately. It would be a good idea, if you are thinking of investing in a Rolex watch to go to a reputable dealer such as ourselves at Second Time Round to look at a few different ones, which should then give you a basis of comparison if you should wish to buy privately. Good luck in your search!

Rolex GMT

The Rolex GMT or Rolex GMT Master is a member of the Rolex Oyster Perpetual collection and was originally designed in the 1950s to assist people travelling through multiple time zones. In fact the original design for the Rolex GMT was a project undertaken alongside Pan American Airways with a view to aiding their pilots tell the time as they traversed the time zones.

The feature which made the watch particularly useful to the pilots was the Rolex GMT's ability to display time in two different time zones. Currently the Rolex GMT Master 2, which was released in 1983, can also incorporate a third time zone, whilst also having a sapphire crystal added to it's display too. In 2006 Rolex released a 50th anniversary edition of the GMT. Featuring various technological advancements like Rolex's Parachrom hairspring and a larger Triplock crown, the anniversary edition Rolex GMT also underwent a few aesthetic improvements including larger hands and a bezel made entirely out of ceramic material; something which greatly improved the watch's resistance to damage.

One final feature of the Rolex GMT worth mentioning is it's function as a compass. With the watch laid flat and the 24 hour hand pointed at the sun the 12 o' clock marker on the dial will point North when in the Northern Hemisphere, and South when in the Southern Hemisphere.

Second Time Round as specialists in second hand Rolex watches and used Rolex GMT watches have constantly evolving stock list so if you are interested in owning your own Rolex timepiece you should spend some time browsing through the web site. You could even take advantage of the watch search facility where you can specify the model you want and we will seek out your model and contact you when successful.
