Rolex Submariner

Monday, 11 August 2008

I have previously written about the Omega Seamaster, taking a look at its tie in as the watch of choice for James Bond. Of course this is only a relatively recent association; the Bond purists will probably dismiss any claims to suggest that Omega *is* the superspy's watch. That's because in the books Fleming himself described a Rolex Submariner strapped to Bond's wrist. In addition to this Sean Connery's depiction of the agent featured the Submariner, as did George Lazenby's and the first couple of Roger Moore films too.

It was only the Pierce Brosnan films from 1994 where the association switched from the Rolex Submariner to the Omega Seamaster. And there it has remained. Of course the move is entirely financially motivated. Something (dull) to do with advertising rights (Omega agreeing to "jointly promote their association with the films' producers", Wikipedia).

Nevertheless the Rolex Submariner remains an extremely popular watch, not only because of its association with James Bond, but also because it it's another classic in the Rolex range which is built upon the same values of quality and reliability.
